Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Charter School
The staff of Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Charter School (MESCS) is focused on the vision of inspiring students to become stewards of the environment and the community. This urban school is the only Milwaukee school using the Expeditionary Learning model, guiding students and families in rigorous, community-based service learning expeditions focused on environmental sciences.
The school is comprised of 97% African-American students, 98% of who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. The majority of the children at the school are living in single-parent homes, some of which are headed by grandparents or other extended family. Toyota Family Learning extends effective family engagement practices to the entire school population of 220.
MESCS upholds family and civic involvement through the creation of an eco-campus to address the need for a healthier lifestyle for urban children and families. This charter school is involved in partnerships with both Arts@Large and the Next Door Foundation. One of the objectives MESCS hopes to achieve with Toyota Family Learning is to substantially increase student/family comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
