Plano Family Literacy School
The Plano Family Literacy School (PFLS), part of the Plano (TX) Independent School District, has a mission of building healthy families by developing life, literacy, and parenting skills through intergenerational education. All PFLS participants are English language learners, with 100 percent of the families classified as low-income and living at or below the poverty level. Families attending PFLS speak eight different languages and come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
Since its inception in 1999, PFLS has combined standard classroom learning with novel two-generation approaches that encourage communication, innovative thinking, and processing for both children and adults.
PFLS curriculum includes
- Adult Education
- Early Childhood Education
- Parent Education
- Interactive Literacy Activities (between parents and their children)
- Home Visits
PFLS is embedding the cornerstones of Toyota Family Learning to increase its reach and potential.
