Southwest Solutions (SWS) has served southwest Detroit since 1970, providing a broad range of programs, including basic human services, housing services, support for economic development, and opportunities for resident engagement. SWS is nationally acclaimed as a model for combining community revitalization and nonprofit and entrepreneurial initiatives into the work of a single organization.
Implementation of Toyota Family Learning at SWS will serve up to 100 families at four schools, with the objective of providing parents and children the opportunity to work together to design, plant, tend and harvest two community gardens. Through the cultivation of community gardens, families will engage in physical activity, create green space, revitalize their community, and learn to eat healthfully. The target population of the initiative consists of non-English-speaking, low-income Hispanic/Latino parents with children in grades PK - 3 in four partner elementary schools in Detroit. Participants in the project will be recruited from the existing four-component English Language Learners Program.
