Toberman Neighborhood Center
Since 1903, Toberman Neighborhood Center (TNC) has provided critical services to families living in some of the poorest communities in the Los Angeles area. The organization’s mission is to assist Harbor Area families and individuals by delivering life-changing services that encourage, inform, educate, and empower them to live healthy and purposeful lives. Services meet the vital needs of the community through three main programs: FamilySource Center (referral/support to increase income); Children, Youth, and Family (CYF) Services (youth after-school, parent support) and the Gang Intervention Program (mediation, community building, case management).
The goals of the organization are to increase family literacy, improve high school graduation rates, reinforce the school/home connection, improve community safety, and strengthen the family unit. This is achieved through asset building in children, youth and families. Toberman’s Toyota Family Learning project is based on an extensive strategic planning process that culminated by affirming the family as the most powerful unit of social change.
Toberman is currently using the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets in youth programming and NCFL’s best practices in family literacy to deliver high quality educational programming. The Toyota Family Learning project will build on the center’s 110 years of experience by providing additional opportunities for families to learn together. The Toyota Family Learning project will increase the intensity, capacity, and effectiveness of current family programs.
